Lara Merjane Receives 2025 Global Recognition Award for Excellence in International M&A and Legal Mentorship

In January 2025, Lara Merjane received a Global Recognition Award for her contributions to international mergers and acquisitions and legal mentorship. The award honors her work on complex cross-border transactions and her leadership in supporting the development of globally trained legal professionals.

Over the past 15 years, Lara has played a key role in the execution of multi-jurisdictional M&A transactions valued at up to $2.8 billion across industries including technology, manufacturing, retail, and financial services. Her work has supported deal teams in navigating cross-border regulatory landscapes, mitigating contractual risks, and aligning legal strategy with commercial goals. These transactions have spanned Canada, the United States, Brazil, the British Virgin Islands, China, Australia and other jurisdictions.

Her cross-border experience also includes facilitating U.S.-Canada expansions and supporting corporate structuring for transactions between Ontario and Costa Rica. “International transactions require solutions that balance legal compliance with business goals while respecting regional differences,” says Merjane. Her approach is known for combining technical precision with cultural and business awareness.

In parallel with her transactional work, Lara founded the Brazil-Canada Bar Association Mentorship Program, an initiative designed to support internationally trained lawyers entering the Canadian legal market. The program provides technical training, mentorship, and cultural adaptation resources. To date, it has connected over 50 mentees with experienced legal professionals in private practice, in-house roles, and government. Many participants have successfully passed qualification exams and secured positions at respected organizations during the 2024–2025 cycle.

Previously named Most Admired International Law Professional in Brazil (2023), Lara is recognized for her commitment to excellence and for creating pathways that help legal professionals thrive across borders.

“Lara Merjane’s work advances international law practice through practical innovation,” said Alex Sterling of Global Recognition Awards. “Her contributions have helped establish measurable frameworks for managing complex international legal matters and developing future legal talent.”
